Go visit our Deserts

Hi visitors,

Are you ready to jump into a desert and have a lot of fun with the sand?

You might be thinking about the desert of Sahara (northern Africa) or maybe the Gobi (Between China and Mongolia), but definitely NOT. We are talking about Venezuela because, indeed, we also have a Desert which is called “Los Médanos de Coro”. Los Médanos are types of dunes or mountains of sand and Coro is the Capital City of the state of Falcón where they are located.

Los Médanos de Coro

Los Médanos are located in the north-western area of the county inside a National Park with the same name, Parque Nacional Médanos de Coro. They are a kind of a “neck” that serves as a connector of the mainland with the Peninsula of Paaraguaná.

Many visitors go there every year not only to spend some time in a fascinating destination, but also to have a totally different sensation of the country. The Médanos can be scaled and one of the greatest pleasure for young and old people is rolling on them from the top 🙂

Flora: As in all desert, vegetation is sparse, with not much plant species, mainly cactus. There are also small trees like divi-dive, the yabo and olivo.

Fauna: Likewise, wildlife is somewhat scarce, being able to observe reptiles, iguanas, bats and anteaters, among others. There is only a few mammals like fox, and some rabbits. There are also some kinds of birds such as the Corean (related to Coro, the city) Cardinal, hawks, doves, jays, pelicans and egrets.

Weather: The climate in the park is one of the most arid of Venezuela, and the average temperature throughout the year is between 25 and 30 °C (77 and 86 °F).

Get In: By air is the easiest way. Flying from themainairport of Venezuela, Maiquetía (Caracas) until the city of Coro state of Falcón. Once there, you can rent a car because the Médanos are only 30 min away driving from Coro. Only half an hour and you are right there, in this unique landscape.

We recommend to spend up to three days for this place. Even though one day is enough to spend in the Médanos. The extra days you can go around the capital city of the State, Coro.

Security tips:

  • Always keep monitored your belongings.
  • Try to book flight tickets, car rental and hotel in advance. Do it as soon as you can. The sooner, the better. Remember the city where you might want to stay is Coro and from there you will move around.
  • Bring sporty and comfortable clothing because the weather is very warm.
